THE NEWTOWN DAILY

Everything Newtown needs to know this morning — in one scroll.
Hot & sticky — 36–37°C, humid. Thunderstorm possible by evening. Carry an umbrella — likely the last dry-ish day.
Arrives this weekend. IMD window for Kolkata & South Bengal: June 13–16. North Bengal covered since June 9.
Normal services on the New Garia–Airport (Orange) line corridor. No disruptions as of last night.
NKDA helpline 1800-103-7652. Report waterlogging the moment it starts.
The monsoon lands this weekend. Newtown's flood-defence race is happening right now.
Why a tender notice on NKDA's website is the most important Newtown story of the week.
The Southwest Monsoon is expected to reach Kolkata and South Bengal between June 13 and 16 — which means Newtown's first big rains are likely days, possibly hours, away.
Here's what most residents don't realise: whether key crossings waterlog this monsoon may depend heavily on the condition of two critical canals being de-silted this month.
The two canals that decide Newtown's monsoon
Newtown's stormwater doesn't vanish — it drains through a network of internal channels into two key canals in Action Area II. NKDA has just floated tenders for de-silting them:
- Canal-A: from the drainage pumping station at City Centre-II to Ram Mandir, AA-II
- Canal-B: from behind Malancha to Eden Court, AA-II
The tender timeline overlaps with the expected monsoon arrival window — meaning the cleaning of Newtown's main drainage arteries is being procured close to, not well ahead of, the first rains.
Why de-silting matters (the 30-second science)
Over the dry months, canals silt up — mud, plastic, construction runoff. A silted canal can lose a significant part of its carrying capacity during intense rainfall. When a heavy spell dumps 60–80mm in a few hours, water that can't enter the canal can back up through the drains and surface at the crossings residents know too well.
What this means for you
If you live or commute through AA-II — Malancha, Eden Court, City Centre-II belt — the first heavy spell of the season will be the real test. Residents may experience slower drainage during the first major spells of the season.
Newtown's pumping stations help, but pumps can only push water into canals that have room to receive it.
The honest picture: Newtown's drainage is among the better-designed networks in the region. But design capacity and maintained capacity are two different numbers, and the gap between them is what residents feel on the street.
What we'll do
The Newtown Daily will track this through the season: which crossings flood, how fast they clear, and whether the de-silting work actually happens on time. If your lane goes under — tell us in The Tracker below. Your reports become the township's flood map.

"Feeling blessed to be a resident of Newtown. After buying our apartment here we lived in the United States for years. When we came back, our family began a musical journey together — and SUHRID was born. Our younger one plays harmonica, drums and keyboard; the elder plays keyboard, drums and guitar. My husband drums and sings, and I sing and play the harmonica. Our first stages were right here in Newtown — and that's where the chapter began."
